EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (3-1) continued its early season schedule by beginning a three-game series at the Dunn Hospitality Classic. The Warriors topped host and No. 13 Southern Indiana (1-3) 6-5 on Friday afternoon. WSU led 6-1 after the top of the fourth inning and held onto win 6-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Screaming Eagles scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning but starter
Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (1-0) was able to strand two runners and limit the damage. With one out in the top of third inning,
Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) singled up the middle and stole second base. Following a walk to
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.),
Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) tied the game with an RBI single into left field. WSU took a 2-1 lead after a
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) RBI.
JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) followed with a productive groundout to the right side to plate the third run of the inning.
Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) kept the rally going with an RBI double to left to stretch WSU's lead to 4-1. Horvath worked around a double, an error and a walk to keep the three-run lead intact.
- Baldwin added two more RBI to his total with a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning. USI trimmed deficit to 6-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Southern Indiana scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits to make it a one-run game, 6-5. The Warriors held onto to win the one-run game and improve to 3-1.
AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin powered the Green & Gold offense by going 4-for-5 with three RBI.
ON THE MOUND
- Horvath started and lasted four and 2/3 innings and struck out four batters, while allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) allowed a run in his three and 1/3 innings of work.
Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) worked a quick ninth inning for his first save of the season.
