Five-Run Inning Dooms Baseball at Davenport

The Warriors will look to win their first GLIAC series of the season on Sunday.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (10-8 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) met Davenport (9-9 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday for the second league game of the season and DU evened the series at one win apiece with a 10-4 victory.  The Panthers combined for eight runs in the second and third innings, which would be too much for WSU to overcome.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After WSU posted doubles in each of the first two innings, DU struck first with a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.  A walk loaded the bases and a two-run single gave the Panthers a 3-0 advantage.  Two more RBI singles stretched the home lead to 5-0.  The offense arrived for the Warriors in the top of the third inning as WSU scored three runs on two hits.  Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) drove in runs, while a double play allowed a third run to cross but helped DU escape the frame with the lead intact.  Outs continued to come at a premium as the Panthers extended their lead to 8-3 with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning with a dropped fly ball extending the frame.

- A dropped fly ball allowed Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) to advance to second base to start the fifth inning and he later scored on an RBI single from Mergener into center field, cutting the deficit to four.  That deficit reached five with an RBI double for the Panthers in the bottom of the seventh inning.  A leadoff triple produce an RBI groundout to give DU a 10-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin was the lone Warrior to register a multiple-hit game, while Mergener drove in a pair of runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (0-2) allowed nine runs (two earned) on 14 hits over six and 2/3 innings.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) worked the final inning and a 1/3, allowing an earned run.

UP NEXT
- The doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Sunday.  The Warriors and Panthers will conclude the four-game series beginning with game three at noon.
