Archived Video Broadcast

The Malone University women's basketball team earned an impressive 83-68 home GLIAC victory over visiting Walsh University in Malone's Osborne Hall Monday night.

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 8-11 overall and to 6-9 in conference play while the Cavaliers fell to 14-7 overall and to 8-7 in the GLIAC.

In a contest in which Malone never trailed , the first of two ties came at 2-2 before the Pioneers pulled away early, extending their lead to a first-half high of 14 points at 25-11 with 9:20 left in the period. By the end of the half, though, Walsh had trimmed the Malone advantage to just five points, at 34-29.

At the beginning of the final stanza, the Cavaliers completed a 9-2 run to knot the score at 36-all with 16:08 left in the game. Not allowing the visitors to gain any more momentum, the hosts then ripped off 10 straight points to take a 46-36 lead and then maintained a lead of between eight and 12 points until five minutes remained.  The Cavaliers twice cut the Pioneer edge to just seven points, though, with the latest coming at 66-59 with 3:59 left. But at that point, Malone would not be denied as the Pioneers slowly pulled away for the 15-point, 83-68 triumph.

For Malone, guard Rachel Goddard posted team bests and season highs in both points and assists as she racked up 18 points and dished out six assists. Forward Bri Libertore followed with 15 points while also pulling down a season-high (tied) 10 rebounds to lead the Pioneers in that category. Guard Kristen Massey also hit twin figures in scoring with 14 points while guard Alahna Singleton recorded a season-high nine rebounds.  In addition, guard Audrey Myers recorded nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and a steal for the Pioneer cause.

For Walsh, Kelsey Funderburgh paced the squad in points with 17 and also in rebounds with nine followed closely by Brooklyn Wooten who had eight boards.

Malone will next compete in an away GLIAC contest on Thursday at Lake Erie College in a 6:00 p.m. game.
