Men's Tennis Wins 4-2 Over #37-Grand Valley State to Play on Championship Sunday

The Warriors defeated the Lakers for a second time this year.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (14-9 overall) topped #37-Grand Valley State (14-7 overall) by a 4-2 margin in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday in Midland, Mich., to secure a spot in the championship match on Sunday.

The Warriors played in their first match of the weekend at the Greater Midland Tennis Center after earning a bye through the first round.  WSU placed second in the regular season behind Ferris State and came into the event as the two seed.

The Green and Gold will receive an opportunity to avenge its 4-3 loss to FSU on April 14 by playing the Bulldogs in the GLIAC Tournament Championship. Ferris State, the top-ranked program at the tournament and Regular-Season Champions, shut out fifth-seeded Purdue Northwest 4-0 in the other semifinal contest.

DOUBLES
Wayne State captured the opening doubles point by winning both completed singles matches on Saturday.

The second-ranked doubles team in all of Division II, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) defeated Sean Miller and Freddy Cossio at the first flight, while Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) and Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) downed Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov by a 6-4 decision at the No. 3 position.

Action at the No. 2 spot went unfinished, with Dom Spicer (London, England) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) squaring off against Jorge Ruiz and Chimo Minguez.

With their victory, Drenth and Grey moved to 9-1 in their past 10 doubles matches together.  Mikkelsen and Steele improved to 4-2 with one another after their triumph.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold finished the effort by claiming three of the five completed singles matches.

Grey, the fifth-ranked singles player in the country, faced No. 63-ranked Denys Zamaraiev and secured set wins of 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2 at the first flight for his eighth consecutive triumph.

Over at the No. 2 position, Drenth (ranked No. 14 in the nation) downed the No. 70-ranked Sean Miller by scores of 6-4 and 6-0.  It was the junior's 10th straight singles victory and improved him to 18-1 at the flight in 2024.

Spicer registered back-to-back set wins of 6-2 in his win against Lucas Gonzalez at the No. 3 spot.  Overall, Wayne State's three singles wins came at the top three positions against the Lakers.

Playing in the match for the first time was Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) in his contest with Victor Lopes at the No. 4 position.  The Warrior won the first set 6-1, but fell 6-1 and 6-2 in the other two sets.

Mikkelsen lost by matching 6-1 scores to Minguez at the sixth flight, which served as GVSU's second point of the overall match.

The only affair in the category that went unfinished was Benjamin Hill's (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) contest against Ruiz at the No. 5 spot.  The freshman, in his first action of the day, had a 6-4 triumph in the opening set - but that was the sole result from the match.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will attempt to pull off the upset against Ferris State in Sunday's GLIAC Tournament Championship in Midland.  Action is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.  It will also be a re-match of last season's championship match that the Warriors won by a 4-0 decision.  The Green and Gold are looking to claim its third consecutive tournament title.
