Oilers Drop DH vs Wayne State

Detroit, MI – The University of Findlay baseball team wrapped up their weekend series with Wayne State University on Sunday, May 1 with a couple of losses at the hands of the Warriors. With the double-header loss, the Oilers' record falls to 14-25 overall and 7-17 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

Game 1 (L 3-1) Box Score

Austin Rodesky and Addison Pawelek were locked in a pitcher's dual for the majority of the game as they each traded zeros through five innings.

Findlay finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Brian Cappiello singled with one out and advanced on another single from Christion Smith. Peter Yorgen then hit an infield single to load the bases and after a strikeout, Troy Merriman walked, scoring Capiello for the 1-0 lead.

Wayne State wasted no time getting that run back as they answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs on three hits off of Rodesky, who trough five, had only allowed three hits. Findlay went quietly in the seventh to end the first game.

Rodesky, 5-7 on the year, took the loss after going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out nine. He is now second in the GLIAC with 89 strikeouts and, with potentially two starts left, needs just 11 strikeouts to become the first pitcher in school history to reach 100 strikeouts in a season.

Yorgen was the only player for Findlay to have two hits while Cappeillo had a single and a run scored.

The Oilers scored their one run on four hits, made one error, and left seven runners on base.

Game 2 (L 2-1Box Score

The second contest was another battle between pitchers, this time featuring Mark Delas and JT Conti.

Wayne State was the first to score as they were able to plate a pair of runs in the third inning off Delas to make the lead 2-0.

Findlay's lone run of the game came in the fifth inning when Troy Merriman led off with a double and advanced on a groundout. Derrick Herd rolled a single through the right side and Merriman crossed the plate to make the score 2-1. The Oilers would threaten in the ninth as they picked up a couple of singles, but failed to drive in the tying run.

Delas, now 3-3 this year, took the loss as he pitched 7.2 innings and threw 124 pitches. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on eight hits. He walked two and struck out nine.

Herd led the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI while Merriman had one base knock and scored a run.

Findlay will play the remaining two games of their series with Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday, May 3 at the Cube at 2:00 p.m. Make-A-Wish and the University of Findlay will have a special presentation before the first game.
