Tech Men Claim 85-71 Triumph vs. Southern Wesleyan

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Michigan Tech outscored Southern Wesleyan by 11 in the second half en route to an 85-71 victory over Southern Wesleyan at the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic.

Freshmen starters Bryan Heath (22 points) and Kyle Monroe (18) combined for 40 of Tech's 85 points, and Kyle Stankowski added 16 more off the bench to give the Huskies their first win of 2015-16.

"We spread the wealth on offense, and I was pleased with our shooting," said Tech coach Kevin Luke. "Our fundamentals weren't very good on defense, but I'm happy to get the win."

Tech (1-1) led 43-40 at halftime after both teams shot 62 percent from the floor. Heath had four triples on the opening 20 minutes and led all scorers with 14 points.

The Black and Gold opened up a 66-58 advantage midway through the second half as Stankowski threw down a dunk and added a jumper from the elbow.

Jason Hawke's triple with 6:00 to play made it a 69-60, and the Huskies were able to close it out from there.

Southern Wesleyan (1-5) made 10 of its first 15 3-pointers before missing its next five as the Huskies' lead grew.

Heath's 22 points came on just 13 field goal attempts. Monroe and Stankowski posted eight rebounds apiece.

Both Dillon Gordon and Jeff Gregory notched career highs in assists. Gordon had eight, and Gregory added six more. Neither had a turnover.

Tech finished at 58 percent from the floor compared to the Warriors' 44 percent. The Huskies out-rebounded SWU by a 36-20 margin.

Michigan Tech will turn around and play again tomorrow. The Huskies face host Kentucky Wesleyan at 5 p.m. ET.
