Baseball Wins Road Series at Saginaw Valley State

The Warriors improve to 17-7 in the GLIAC with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- With the regular season entering the home stretch, the Wayne State University baseball team (27-14, 17-7 GLIAC) won both game of Sunday's doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State (15-25, 9-15 GLIAC) to move into second place in the league.  WSU scored five late runs to take game one 6-1 and held off a late SVSU comeback attempt to win 13-10.

For the day, the Warriors pounded out 27 hits, including four home runs.

With the two wins head coach Ryan Kelley now has 273 victories in his nine seasons at the helm, which is the most in program history.  He passes Rodger George who posted a 272-371-11 in his 14 seasons.  Kelley's .594 career winning percentage is also the best mark in program history.

GAME ONE (W, 6-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- SVSU took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. WSU threatened in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff single and a home error but the Cards kept the Warriors off the scoreboard.  Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich) began the fifth inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a passed balled.  Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) tied the game at 1-1 with a sac fly to center field in the fifth inning.

- Back-to-back home runs from Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) in the top of the sixth inning put WSU up 3-1 before the Warriors added three more runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead.  Harms connected for another big fly, scoring two runs and Baldwin drove in the inning's other tally with an RBI double.

AT THE PLATE
- Harms finished with two home runs and three RBI, while Baldwin went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

ON THE MOUND
- Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (4-3) pitched six innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five batters.  Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) worked a perfect seventh inning to secure the victory.

GAME TWO (W, 13-10)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Baldwin continued his impressive day at the plate with a two-run double in the top of the first inning to begin game two.  Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead with an RBI single through the right side later in the first frame.

- SVSU tied the game at 3-3 with three runs on three hits but starter Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) stranded two runners and kept the game tied.  Another RBI from Baldwin put the Green & Gold on top 4-3 but the Cardinals were quick to tie with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning.

- WSU regained the lead on an RBI single to right from Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) before the Warriors scored five more runs in the seventh inning highlighted by a Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) two-run single and a two-run home run from Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South).  Adams and Baldwin both drove in a run in the eighth, extending WSU's lead to 12-4.  Carrell added an RBI double in the ninth inning, pushing WSU's advantage to nine runs.

- The Cardinals made it interesting at the end, scoring six runs on six hits in the bottom of the ninth inning but WSU would hold on for the 13-10 victory.

AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Adams posted a 3-for-5 day with three runs scored.  Notching two hit games were Carrell, JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.), Kelly and Jorah.

ON THE MOUND
- WSU used six pitchers beginning with Waldrop who allowed three earned runs in four innings.  Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) (3-1) was sharp, allowing an earned run in four innings and struck out two batters.  The Warriors were forced to use four pitchers to get through the ninth inning as Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.), Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn), Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and Tompson all made an appearance.  Tompson recorded the final out with a strikeout to earn his seventh save of the season.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will host Grand Valley State for four games beginning with a Saturday doubleheader.
