DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's tennis team (1-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) kicked off the fall season with a 9-0 win over Lake Superior State University (1-2 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) at the WSU Tennis Courts on Friday. The match was the 500th for WSU head coach
Sheila Snyder, who began her 29th season leading the Warrior women's tennis program.
DOUBLES RESULTS
- Junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) and senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) defeated junior Tara Harvey and senior Macarena Bielsa, 8-6, in the first flight.
- At No. 2 doubles, redshirt freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) and redshirt senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Cousino) bested freshman AlexiAnn Drouin and junior Allison Grandfield, 8-5.
- Freshmen
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia / SMK Seri Hatamas) and
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands / Montessori Lyceum Amsterdam) teamed up for their first college contest, winning 8-3 in the third flight over junior Jenay Andrews and senior Laura Valderrama.
SINGLES RESULTS
- In the first flight, it was Da-Silva with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Drouin, while Mitrache defeated Harvey in two sets (6-1, 6-2) at second singles.
- Kuznetsova and Ghellere matched scores, winning at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, 6-1, 6-1 over opponents Bielsa and Valderrama.
- Liong won 6-0, 6-0 over Grandfield in her first singles contest, at the fifth flight, while junior
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont. / St. Anne's S.S.) rounded out the victories 6-0, 6-2 over junior Kirsten Malpass at No. 6 singles.
