Men's Tennis Handed 4-3 Loss by Southwest Baptist

The Warriors began their three-day stay in Springfield, Mo.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (5-4 overall) had a rough beginning to its weekend in Springfield, Mo., falling 4-3 to Southwest Baptist (4-3 overall) on Friday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

DOUBLES
The day started off nicely for the Warriors, winning all three matches in doubles action.

Coming off his GLIAC Player of the Week honor, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and partner Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) picked up a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot. 

The duo of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) also claimed a 6-4 victory over Youssef Nabil and Alvaro Nunez at the No. 2 spot.

The Green and Gold swept doubles with Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England), who handled their Southwest Baptist opponents with a 6-2 win.

SINGLES
The Bearcats would go on to win the match by claiming four of the six matches in singles. 

WSU picked up their two victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots. Drenth's strong day continued when he earned a three-set victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) win against Makary Adamek. 

Returning from not seeing the court on Saturday or Sunday last week, Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) did not miss a beat, as he was victorious 6-4, 6-3 against Mikar Fisher of SBU.

Spicer fell at the No. 2 spot in three sets, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 3-6, while Grey similarly dropped a three-set match at No. 3 (7-6 (6), a 6-2 win in the second set, 7-6 (5)) in what was the closest contested match of the afternoon.

At No. 4, Laws received a 6-3, 6-3 defeat in straight sets, while Kitayama lost at No. 6 by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 1-6.

Wayne State will look to rebound at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Saturday when they battle #16-Northwest Missouri State at 8 p.m.
