Vulcans earn sweep at Savannah Invitational

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 6) – Behind eight combined hits by junior outfielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) and a pair of strong starting-pitching performances, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team collected a sweep on Saturday with wins over the University Findlay (Ohio) and Bellarmine University (Ky.) at the Savannah Invitational.

With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 6-3 this season.

Against Findlay, Cal U claimed an 11-3 victory after DiMatteo went 5-for-5 with a three-run homer, five total RBI and three stolen bases. Junior Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) earned the win after throwing four, no-hit innings before reaching his pitch count.

In the nightcap, the Vulcans earned an 8-3 win against Bellarmine. Freshman Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) registered his first career college victory after posting six strikeouts in six innings. DiMatteo belted another longball and finished the game with three hits, while freshman Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) also posted a multi-hit game.

Cal U concludes play at the Savannah Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, when it faces host Armstrong Atlantic State University (Ga.).
