Baseball Earns Split at Saginaw Valley State

Taylor Horn struck out five in relief during game two to lead WSU to a 8-7 victory.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (25-14, 15-7 GLIAC) split at Saginaw Valley State (15-23, 9-13 GLIAC) on Saturday as the Warriors look to regain the form they showed during an eight game-winning streak earlier this season.  WSU dropped game one 3-2 before winning game two, 8-7, in a back-and-forth affair.

GAME ONE (L, 2-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Cardinals struck first with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning and scored another run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.  However, a picked off runner slowed the home team's momentum.  Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) plated pinch-runner Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) with an RBI single into center field in the top of the fifth inning to get WSU on the board.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) continued the rally with an RBI single to right, bringing the Warriors within one, 3-2.

- The Green & Gold looked to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning following a one-out double from Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's).  Rose advanced to third on a wild pitch but was thrown out at home trying to score on a fielder's choice.

- The game-tying run came to the plate to begin the seventh inning and reached as Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) singled to right field.  However, the comeback attempt would run out of time as SVSU took the series opener.

AT THE PLATE
- Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) led the offense with a 2-for-4 game.

ON THE MOUND
- Starter Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (5-3) pitched all six innings for his first complete game of the season, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out seven batters.

GAME TWO (W, 8-7)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Saginaw Valley State hit a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead early in game two.  After Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) was hit by a pitch in the top of the second inning, the bases were loaded for Jorah who singled home two runs with a single to right center.  Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) gave WSU a 4-1 lead with a two-run single back up the middle.

- SVSU trimmed WSU's lead to 4-3 with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning.  Carrell extended the lead to 5-3 with an RBI double to left center in the top of the fourth inning.  However, the Cardinals scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 advantage.  The Warriors tied the game on an RBI double from Adams in the sixth inning but the go-ahead run was cut down at home trying to score from second on a single to right field.

- The Cards took a 7-6 lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning but an infield RBI single from Winkelseth tied the contest at 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning.  Jorah followed with an RBI double put WSU back on top, 8-7.

- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) (2-0) danced around a two-out triple in the ninth to seal the one-run win.

AT THE PLATE
- Adams went 2-for-5 and drove in three RBI, while Jorah also drove in three runs.  In addition, Carrell and Rose both posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
- Conti started and worked the first three innings and allowed six earned runs before Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) tossed the next two and a 1/3 innings.  Horn improved to 2-0 by stabilizing the pitching staff and pitching three and 2/3 scoreless innings, while striking out five batters.

UP NEXT
- The teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday with the first pitched scheduled for noon.
