The Malone University volleyball team split a pair of matches played at the University of Findlay Saturday afternoon, dropping a five-set GLIAC contest to the host Oilers but defeating Alderson Broaddus University (WV) in straight sets.
In their oppening match vs. Findlay, the Pioneers lost 25-22, 16-25, 26-24, 31-33, 11-15 but, later in the afternoon, defeated non-conference foe Alderson Broaddus 25-22, 25-17, 25-22.
With the 1-1 day, Malone's record moved to 13-14 overall on the year and to 9-7 in the GLIAC. Findlay improved to 18-6 overall and to 13-3 in the conference after its win over Malone. Alderson Broaddus, after losing to the Pioneers, fell to 9-20 overall on the season.
In the Findlay match, Malone was paced on offense by outside hitter
Taylor Slauterbeck who cracked down a team-best 17 kills while outside hitter
Sarah Brent followed with 14 kills.
Anna Hays also contributed a double-digit kill effort as she pocketed 11 in the match. Setters
Jordan Sollars and
Brianna Clegg offered up 25 and 24 assists, respectively, for the Pioneer offensive cause.
Defensively,
Katie Hasebein paced the squad in digs with 25 while Slauterbeck was not far behind with 17. Brent was the block leader for the squad with five block assists in the match while middle hitter
Elizabeth Maczuzak was right behind with four block assists.
In the Alderson Broaddus win, Slauterbeck and Maczuzak led the way in kills with nine apiece while outside hitter
Haley Kool followed with six kills. In additions, Clegg and Sollars dished out another 16 and 15 assists, respectively.Â
On the defensive side, defensive specialist
Lynsey Trusty paced the squad in digs with 13 while Maczuzak tallied a team-best three block assists.
Malone will next compete in a home GLIAC match on Friday (Nov. 7th) vs. Tiffin University at 7:00 p.m.
