HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech outscored Malone 49-38 in the second half to earn an 86-72 victory at the SDC Gym tonight. The Huskies won their GLIAC home opener for the sixth consecutive year to improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

All five Tech starters scored in double figures led by the freshmen Bryan Heath (22 points) and Kyle Monroe (18).

Malone (3-2, 0-1 GLIAC) took a 27-19 lead 10 minutes into the game. The Huskies responded with a 9-0 run over the next five minutes for a 28-27 advantage. Heath's triple with 1:19 remaining in the stanza made it a six-point Tech lead, but the hosts would settle for a 37-34 edge at the break.

A pair of Mike Fisher tip-ins around the 13-minute mark of the second half was a catalyst for the Huskies' offense. The Black and Gold pushed their lead from 46-42 to 65-46 in little over five minutes work.

The gap grew to as many as 21. Malone put on a full-court press and clawed back within 14 before running out of time.

"We kept our composure," said Tech coach Kevin Luke. "We did a nice job of moving the ball and getting it inside tonight. A lot of our guys played well."

Heath's 22 points came on 7-of-11 field goal shooting. Monroe added a team-high eight rebounds. Luke Heller (15 points), Dillon Gordon (12) and Jeff Gregory (10) also reached twin figures.

Gregory also did a nice job guarding MU's Christian Graves, who scored 19 in the first half and only five in the second.

Tech shot 50 percent from the floor and from 3-point range as a team. Malone shot 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.

With both teams grabbing 31 rebounds, a big difference in the contest was turnovers. The Huskies forced 15 while committing just nine.

Michigan Tech will complete the two-game home stand with Walsh coming to the SDC Gym on Saturday (Dec. 5). Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
