Women's Hoops Collects 20th Win Over Lake Erie

WSU starts 6-of-6 from behind the arc on Thursday.

DETROIT -- Eyeing its sixth straight win, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (20-2, 16-2 GLIAC) hosted Lake Erie (9-15, 4-14 GLIAC) on Thursday night. WSU secured its third straight 20-win season and fifth such season in program history with an 89-65 win over the Storm. WSU remained unbeaten at home and now sits at 13-0 inside the Matthaei this season and have not lost at home since March 8, 2014.

Head coach Carrie Lohr collected her 77th career victory, which tied Gary Bryce for the second most wins all-time in program history in just her fourth season at the helm. Coach Lohr is averaging 19 wins a season since arriving in Detroit.

Four minutes into the contest WSU led 13-2 after a triple from Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln). The Warriors knocked down their first six attempts from behind the arc including three treys from Streetman. Following the sixth consecutive triple, from Sara Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic), Wayne State led 31-5 at the 12-minute mark.

The Storm cut the home lead to 18, 38-20, at the 4:26 mark. Two free throws from Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) helped WSU match its largest lead of the half at 26, 46-20, with just under one minute left before the break.

At halftime, the Warriors led 46-21 powered by 60 percent shooting (16-of-27) including 6-of-10 from behind the arc. All 13 Warriors played and nine scored in the first 20 minutes.

Lake Erie opened the second half on an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to 49-32 at the 17-minute mark. After a Kayla Gabor three-pointer LEC trailed by 15, 50-35, with 16:19 remaining.

WSU responded with a 12-0 run to take a 62-35 lead at the 13:36 mark. A layup from Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) put WSU on top 70-39 at the the 10:40 mark. Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) gave WSU its largest lead of the night at 33, 74-41 at the 9:43 mark.

Ruhstorfer tallied eight points over the final five minutes to help WSU collect the 89-65 victory.

Five Warriors finished in double figures led by Streetman and Brown with 13 points each. Brown also grabbed eight rebounds. Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern) notched 12 points while Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) chipped in 12 points as well. Ruhstorfer finished with 11 points.

The Warriors received 37 points off their bench. WSU out-rebounded Lake Erie 47-15.

Wayne State will host Ashland on Saturday afternoon before honoring its five seniors against Malone on Feb. 19. In addition, the five-member Hall of Fame Class of 2015 will be recognized on Saturday.
