CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (16-8, 5-4 GLIAC) began a three-game series at Malone (12-14, 7-4 GLIAC) with a Tuesday doubleheader. The Pioneers took game one 4-2 before the Warriors used a seven-run seventh inning to take game two 11-5.

Game One (L, 2-4)
Malone jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits and a Wayne State error. The Pioneers began the inning with two singles, a double and another single.

Starting pitcher David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) (1-2) settled in after that, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. The Green & Gold scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run double from Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) to cut Malone's lead in half at 4-2.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) replaced Frederick with two outs in the fifth inning and did not allow a run in his 1 1/3 innings of work while collecting two strikeouts.

The Warriors had their opportunities to get back into the game in the sixth and seventh innings, stranding two runners on base in each of those innings but were unable to push across any runs.

Frederick went 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts. Nathan Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) finished 3-for-4.

Game Two (W, 11-5)
WSU began game two by picking up a run in the top of the first inning on a Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) sacrifice fly.

Once again, the bottom of the second inning proved to be troublesome for the Warriors as the Pioneers scored three runs on two hits and a Warrior error.

Another sacrifice fly, this one from Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle), cut Malone's lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning.

WSU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning with two runs on two hits. Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) collected an RBI in the inning.

Starter Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) (2-0) delivered a shutdown innings to preserve the Warriors' advantage in the fifth inning.

The Warriors' closer Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) entered to begin the bottom of the sixth inning and kept the Warriors' lead intact.

WSU broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 11-3. Carrell, Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard), Clifton and Zimmerman all drove in runs during the rally. The Pioneers committed three errors in the frame.

Malone added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but Ruch was able to close the game with a strikeout.

Carrell drove in three runs, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Hall lasted five innings and gave up two earned runs while striking out four.

With his ninth save of the season Ruch matched the program record for career saves of 19 held by Billy Hurley (2010-2012). In addition, Ruch passed Jon Venuto (1999-2002) with the game two save. He also has his sights set on the program's single-season record of 11 saves also held by Hurley.

WSU and Malone will conclude the series on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
