Baseball Splits Final Day of Regular Season

Chris Horvath led WSU to a game two win with his fourth win of the season.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- On the final day of the regular season, the Wayne State University baseball team (22-23-1, 16-15-1 GLIAC) split with Ashland (33-15, 21-11 GLIAC) on Sunday. Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) (4-1) turned in his second impressive start of the week in game one as the Warriors won 6-2  while the Eagles held off a late WSU charge to take game two, 7-4.

Game One (W, 6-2)
A lead off home run for Ashland in the bottom of the first inning and a run on a passed ball put the Eagles on top 2-0.

Both teams were scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when WSU scored six runs on four hits and a AU error. Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) started the scoring with a two-run single before Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) gave WSU the lead with a three-run double to left center. Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) added a run on an RBI single into right field to give the Warriors a 6-2 lead.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) replaced Horvath to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. He retired the Eagles in order to secure the victory.

Horvath finished with four strikeouts in six innings while allowing one earned run on nine hits and one walk.

Game Two (L, 4-7)
Another first-inning home run for Ashland gave the home team a 2-0 lead to begin the series finale. The Eagles tacked on a run in the second inning with a RBI single.

A lead off home run for AU in the fourth inning extended its lead to 4-0.

Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) started the fifth inning with a double to left center and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt from Kevin Moore (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance). Josh Arndt (Sterling Heights. Mich. / Oxford) put WSU on the board with an infield RBI single.

The Eagles got that run back with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Nate Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) trimmed the deficit to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly. Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) pulled the Warriors within a run, 5-4, with a two-run blast to left field in the top of the eighth inning.

Once again, Ashland had an answer and scored two runs on a double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Randy Kuzdak (Redford, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) sent a one-out single into left but that would be all the offense WSU could produce in the inning as the Eagles secured the series victory with a 7-4 game two triumph.

Starter Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (4-5) tossed four innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits and struck out three while walking two.

Ashland and Wayne State will meet again on Thursday to begin the GLIAC Tournament in Xenia, Ohio at 2 PM.
