Men’s Soccer Falls 4-1 To Cedarville In Non-Conference Action

Caleb Jones' first goal of the season put the Pioneers on the scoreboard early in the second half of Tuesday's contest.

Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-1 setback at home to visiting Cedarville University.

After opening the scoring with a penalty-kick goal in the 14th minute, the Yellow Jackets (2-1 overall) pushed their advantage to 2-0 shortly before halftime. CU's  Chris Anderson headed home the second goal of the afternoon off a free kick from teammate Ethan Shula.

Malone midfielder Caleb Jones cut the deficit in half less than seven minutes into the second period after firing a free kick past the Cedarville defenders and goalie from roughly 10 yards in front of the penalty box.

However, the 2-1 margin was as close as the Pioneers would get as the visitors tacked on goals in the 64th and 66th minutes to put the contest out of reach.

Cedarville held a 15-9 edge in shots on the afternoon and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.  Pioneer keeper Jon Crabbs collected two saves while a pair of Yellow Jacket netminders combined to stop three Malone shots.

Malone (1-1 overall) will be back in action at home Friday when it opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 4:00 p.m. match against rival Walsh University.  Live statistics will be provided at http://www.sidearmstats.com/malone/msoc/
