Volleyball Tops Michigan Tech for Fourth Straight Win

Wayne State improves to 13-2 after finishing 3-0 this week.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Despite playing its first road matches since the first weekend of the season, it was more of the same for the Wayne State University volleyball program (13-2, 6-1 GLIAC) on Sunday against Michigan Tech (6-9, 3-4 GLIAC).  After dropping the first set the Warriors won three straight sets to capture its third victory of the week.

WSU has the best overall record in the league and sit in first place in the GLIAC South Division after beating Findlay on Tuesday.  Prior to this week, the Warriors were receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll for the second consecutive week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Huskies led the opening set 5-3 before the Warriors tied the set at 6-6.  MTU used a 12-1 run to take an 18-7 lead and put the game away, going on to win 25-18.

• WSU took the first three points in the second set and led 11-7 following a kill by Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield).  After a 4-0 run Michigan Tech led 14-12 but the resilient Green & Gold responded with an 8-2 run to lead 20-16.  The rally continued as WSU won 25-19, powered by three kills and a block from Asiedu down the stretch.

• The visitors took an 8-6 lead early in the third set.  Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) tallied a kill and Avery Punches (Rockford, Mich.) followed with a solo block to extend WSU's lead to 11-8.  Wayne State won the race to 20, leading 20-14 after a kill from Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) and a MTU attack error.  The Warriors would take advantage of several Huskies' errors late in the set to win 25-19.

• Punches and Shell teamed up to stuff an MTU attack and put WSU ahead 6-1 in the fourth set.  Asiedu continued to provide the offense and helped Wayne State take a 13-6 lead.  A kill from Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave the Warriors a double-digit lead at 18-8.  Moore would finish the set and match with a kill, giving WSU a 25-12 triumph.

FROM COACH KOTH
"It was a sluggish start but we got better in each set.  Specifically with our serve and pass game.  It was a nice win against a very competitive Michigan Tech team."

UP NEXT
• Wayne State will stay on the road and match up against Hillsdale on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
