HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech scored off a corner kick 1:06 into the second overtime period to break a scoreless deadlock and earn a 1-0 GLIAC women's soccer victory over Walsh at Sherman Field today. Jacqueline Mielke deflected in the Lexi Herrewig feed with her shoulder for the game winner to help the Huskies improve to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
The game, featuring two of the four unbeaten teams in the GLIAC, was physical throughout.
The hosts held the territorial advantage through most of the game and posted a 24-6 advantage in shots. The Cavaliers had a 4-3 lead in shots on goal, however.
Janelle Riedl had a breakaway in the 18th minute that the goalkeeper came out of the box to play just in time.
Tech generated seven corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes, but couldn't convert.
The play was tighter in the second half, with neither team generating any great chances. The Huskies' best was a rebound shot by Taylor Archibald that was pushed wide.
The game went through one overtime and into the second before the Huskies finally scored.
On Tech's school-record-tying ninth corner kick of the game, Herrewig served the ball just past the near post. Mielke rose above a crowd of players and deflected it into the net. A Walsh defender attempted to clear the ball and play continued for a few seconds before the officials conferred and declared it a goal.
"I thought we played a good game against a very good team in Walsh today," said coach Michelle Jacob. "We did a nice job of limiting their shots and creating our own. The number of corner kicks we had today was a testament to our aggressive play."
Michigan Tech, winners of six in a row, will next travel to Ohio for games at Malone and Lake Erie on Friday (Oct. 10) and Sunday (Oct. 12), respectively.
Notes: Tech tied the single-game record for corner kicks with nine, tying the previous record from Sept. 16, 2012, vs. Notre Dame (Ohio) … Mielke leads the team with five goals and 12 total points.
