Volleyball Knocks Off Ferris State in Five Sets

FSU was ranked seventh in the country prior to Saturday's match.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (10-7, 6-3 GLIAC) upset seventh-ranked Ferris State (14-3, 8-1 GLIAC) on Saturday evening, handing the nationally-ranked Bulldogs their first league loss of the season as the Warriors snapped a three-match losing streak.  WSU dropped the first set but won the next two before FSU forced a fifth set, which Wayne State won 15-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The home Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set and eventually led 19-11.  FSU continued to control the game and won 25-14.

- The second set was tied at 7-7 after a kill from Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption).  Ferris State took a 13-10 lead before WSU tied the set at 13-13 following a point from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron).  The Green & Gold led 21-18 and would eventually win 25-21.

- FSU led 13-5 in the third set before the Warriors could find their swing.  A 9-1 run gave WSU a 21-20 advantage.  The rally was capped by a block from Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central).  After the Bulldogs led 22-21, WSU took the final four points to win the set 25-22.

- The fourth set was tied at 4-4 but Ferris State took a 9-6 lead after a WSU attacking error.  The deficit grew to 13-9 before WSU was able to trim lead to 19-18 after a quick 3-0 run.  WSU was unable to overcome the Bulldogs as FSU would win the set 25-21, forcing a fifth set.

- In the race to 15, FSU led 5-3 but the Warriors would win the next five points to sprint out to an 8-5 lead.  FSU tied the set at 11-11 but Wayne State won four of the final five points to secure a 15-12 set-five victory and win the match 3-2.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Three Warriors finished with at least 10 kills led by Richardson and Asiedu with 14, while Moore tallied 12.  WSU's defense was excellent all night and five Warriors collected 10 or more digs led by the trio of Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.), Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) and Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) who all had 17 digs.  Breault posted 47 assists to aid the offense.

UP NEXT
-  Wayne State will compete at the annual Midwest Regional Crossover on Friday and Saturday.  Those three opponents and start times will be announced early next week.
