Huskies Sweep Lakers in GLIAC Opener

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Michigan Tech swept Lake Superior State 3-0 tonight in both teams GLIAC volleyball opener at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Huskies eked out the first set 26-24, cruised to a 25-12 victory in set two and finished it off with a 25-21 score in set three.

Sylvie Rokosh posted a match-high 13 kills on 29 attempts to pace the Huskies. Fellow middle Stephanie Dietrich added eight kills and a match-best .538 hitting percentage.

"Our middles played really well," said coach Matt Jennings. "Sylvie and Stephanie both had outstanding matches.

"It's great to get our first conference win."

Set one was a back-and-forth affair. With the score tied at 24, Kendall Ward and Rokosh posted consecutive kills to lift the Huskies to the win.

Elle Heinonen and Rosie Aumann served the Black and Gold to a 10-3 lead in set two, and they never looked back. Tech hit .379 in the set compared to .000 for the Lakers.

Michigan Tech closed out the match by winning the final five points of set three. With the score favoring LSSU 21-20, the hosts committed an error and Rokosh and Dietrich combined for four kills to put the match away.

Aumann had 37 assists for the Huskies. Jacqueline Aird tied for match-high honors with 12 digs. Heinonen added 11 digs and three service aces.

Tech improved to 2-4 with the victory. It will travel to face Northwood tomorrow at 5 p.m.
