COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-16, 4-13 GLIAC) traveled to Ohio Dominican (7-14, 5-11 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and looked to avenge an overtime loss earlier this season in Detroit. Cold shooting late in the second half doomed WSU as ODU collected the 82-68 victory.
Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) scored 14 second-half points to match his career-high of 16 points.
Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) scored the first six points of the game to give WSU a 6-0 lead two minutes into the contest. A three-point play from Mike DeLeon tied the game at 6-6 with a three-point play at the 17:20 mark.
Five straight points from
Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) put the Warriors on top 11-8 with 15:30 left before halftime. Toma's second three-pointer of the game gave WSU a 16-15 advantage with 13 minutes left in the first stanza. Chad Nelson followed with a layup to put the Panthers back on top by one.
Both teams went scoreless over the next two minutes before
DeMarius Miller (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Romeoville) sunk two free throws to help WSU regain the lead, 18-17.
A 9-0 ODU run put the Panthers ahead 26-18 at the 8:49 mark.
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) connected from behind the arc to cut the deficit to four with 2:25 remaining before the break.
At halftime, WSU trailed 39-33. Toma and Lewis paced the Warriors with eight points each while Nelson and DeLeon both scored 10 points for the Panthers. Wayne State out-shot Ohio Dominican 50 percent (13-26) to 41.9 percent (13-31). ODU made 10 of 11 free throws while WSU only had four free throw attempts, making all four.
The Warriors scored two quick buckets to pull within two, 41-39, at the 18-minute mark. Key tallied his seventh and eighth points of the half to keep the Green & Gold within two, 50-48, with 13:55 left to play.
DeLeon gave the Panthers a seven-point lead with a three-point play at the 12-minute mark.
Key continued to be WSU's go-to scorer as he collected back-to-back baskets to cut the home lead to three, 56-53.
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) kept WSU trailing by three with two buckets and Toma followed with a jumper to trim the deficit to one, 64-63, with just under six minutes to play.
At the three-minute mark, Key matched his career-high of 16 points with a layup to pull within three, 70-67. The Panthers answered with two quick layups to extend their lead to seven points.
The Warriors went the final 2:55 without a field goal and made just one field goal over the final 4:50 as ODU pulled away for the 82-68 victory.
Joining Key in double figures were Toma with 13 points and Bishop with 11. Five Panthers scored in double-digits led by 19 points from DeLeon.
