Promising Start Does Not Equal Victory for Warriors

Top-seeded Ashland advanced with a 7-1 victory over Wayne State.

XENIA, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (22-24-1) opened the GLIAC Tournament against the regular season champions Ashland (34-15). The Warriors led 1-0 early but missed opportunities at the plate and timely Eagles' hitting led to a 7-1 win for top-seed Ashland.

WSU took an early 1-0 advantage with three hits in the top of the first inning. A one-out single from Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City), a stolen base and a single from Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) had runners at the corners. Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) sent an RBI single into left field to put WSU on top. A walk to Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) loaded the bases but Jake Baldwin (9-1) was able to get Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) to ground out to second base and end the threat.

Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (6-2) retired AU in order in the second inning. Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) led off the bottom of the second with a single and Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) followed with a single to right. However, Rose was thrown out on the play coming around second to slow the rally.

The GLIAC Player of the Year, Stephen James gave Ashland a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run over the right center field wall. The Eagles added five more runs on three hits in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-2. Mike Murley (Royal Oak, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) were used in the inning out of the WSU bullpen.

Christian Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) also made an appearance and retired the only batter he faced.

The Warriors could only muster one more hit the rest of the way as Ashland advanced to the winner's bracket with the victory.

Tompson tossed three scoreless innings and struck out two batters in his relief appearance.

WSU will face Malone on Friday at 10:30 AM in an elimination game.
