ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The 15th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (3-7 overall) lost both games on Saturday at the 2015 Lewis Indoor Tournament being held at The Dome at the Ballpark. The Warriors fell 11-1 to No. 5 Missouri-St. Louis, then dropped a 3-1 decision to the host Lewis Flyers.
In the opener, the Tritons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Brianna Butler. UMSL added to more in the fourth before the Warriors scored their lone run in the bottom of the frame.
Senior
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) led off with a single and pinch-runner
Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) scored all the way from first on a two-out double by junior
Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview).
Brianna Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) pitched the first four innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts to five walks to fall 2-2 on the season.
Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) tossed the final three innings with three strikeouts and one walk, while surrendering seven runs on seven hits.
Bryce and Lince each went 2-for-3 to account for half of WSU's eight hits.
Hannah Perryman (5-1) struck out four and did not walk a batter in the circle for the Tritons.
In the nightcap, WSU starter
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) allowed a two-run home run in the top of the first to Flyer Kelsey Ullrich.
Wayne State scored its lone run in the bottom of the second as Lince worked a leadoff walk. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) then scored on a single by junior
Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.).
Both teams had eight hits in the contest with junior
Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) going 4-for-4 with a double. Bryce also had two singles.
Butler struck out five and walked one while allowing three earned runs but fell to 1-4 on the season.
Kelly Bowler improved to 2-0 for the Flyers with three strikeouts and one walk while limiting the Warriors to one run.
WSU has scored just 15 runs in 10 games and is 1-6 when scoring two runs or less this season.
Wayne State will conclude play in the Lewis Tournament on Sunday with a contest against Wisconsin-Parkside.
