Mayberry Tosses One-Hitter as Oilers Split

Auburndale, Fla. – The University of Findlay baseball team split a double-header for the second consecutive day on Monday, Feb. 29 vs. Lewis University.

Senior pitcher Mason Mayberry was dominant in the first game as he pitched a one-hit shutout to earn his first victory of the season.

Findlay got ahead early scoring two runs in the first inning when junior Peter Yorgen reached on an infield single and was followed by a two-run blast to right center field from freshman Mark Delas. It was the first home run of the year for Delas and the Oilers.

Two innings later, Yorgen stepped up with one out and crushed a fastball over the left field fence for his first home run of the season, giving the Oilers a 3-0 lead.

The final run for Findlay came in the fifth inning when junior Kevin Schrock singled to lead off the inning and scored with one out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Yorgen.

Findlay finished the game with four runs on seven hits. They made one error.

Mayberry got the win on the mound as he pitched the complete game, got four strikeouts, walked two, and allowed just one hit.

The second contest went differently for the Black and Orange and for the first time this season, a game got away from Findlay.

Lewis jumped on top in the first inning with a run on three hits in the opening frame, but Findlay answered in the bottom half when sophomore Josh Schwerer led the game off with a walk and scored when Yorgen reached on an error by the short stop.

Findlay then took the lead in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Cameron Johnson reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a single from sophomore Troy Merriman.

Lewis was able to answer in the top of the third and then took the lead in the fifth, 3-2.

That lead was extended in the sixth inning off of relief pitcher, sophomore Josh Robinson. That inning ended with the Oilers down 4-2.

The game broke open in the seventh inning when Lewis touched up three Oilers' pitchers for a total of six runs on five hits.

Trailing 10-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Findlay used a string of pinch hitters and scored one more run when freshman Jordan Williams, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a single from sophomore Pete Burkett to get the score to 10-3, the eventual final score.

Starting pitcher, sophomore Alexander Theiss took the loss on the mound after going five innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Yorgen was 3-for-5 in the double-header with a home run and two RBI. 

The Oilers will be back on the field, after a day off, on Wednesday, March 2 when they take on the University of Mary in a game slated to begin at 11:00am.
