USI struck first with a run on three hits in the top of the third inning off starter
Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) (1-1) and added two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
USI gunned down
A.J. Matos (Southgate, Mich. / Detroit Western) at the plate to end the bottom of the third inning to keep WSU off the scoreboard.
Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich.) drove in
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) after Harms stole second base to put the Warriors on the board.
A Warrior error and a misplay in the outfield in the top of the fifth inning would haunt WSU as USI went on to score three runs to take a 6-1 lead.
The Green & Gold loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning but were unable to push any runs across.
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) delivered a one-out, pinch-hit, RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring WSU within four runs. However, USI made a pitching change and were able to retire the next two batters to clinch the victory.
Jackson lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out three Eagles.
Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), Chirs Horvath (Windsor, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) and
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) threw the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.
