Men's Basketball Battles but Falls to Ferris State

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-12, 2-10 GLIAC) lost 75-60 to 17th-ranked Ferris State (16-3, 11-0 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  WSU's defense was strong until the end, holding Ferris State to nearly 20 points below their season average.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU started quick and led 6-4 following a layup by Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) at the 17:03 mark.  The Bulldogs seized control and led 16-8 after a triple by Ben Davidson with 11:51 to play.  An alley-oop from Cortez Jackson (Harper Woods, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lake Shore) to Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) followed by a long-range jumper by Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) energized the Green & Gold and made it 21-15, in favor of the visitors.  Two points from Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) pulled WSU within five, 24-19, at the 7:17 mark.  After FSU extended its lead to 10, WSU went on an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to two, 29-27, with 2:44 left before halftime.  Tyree Martin (Chicago, Ill. / Curie) fueled the rally with four points.  Freddy Johnson (Saginaw, Mich. / Bella Vista / Arthur Hill) connected from beyond the arc with 41 seconds left in the stanza, bringing the Warriors within one, 31-30.  Ferris State led 33-30 at halftime.

Wayne State did not make its first field goal of the second half until the 12:37 mark on a dunk from Martin.  that drought allowed FSU to grow its lead to 46-35.  A tough layup by Owens-White kept the Warriors close, 46-41, at the 10:43 mark.  The deficit was at least 10 until another basket by Owens-White made it 54-45.  A triple by Owens-White trimmed the visitors' advantage to  62-55 with 3:12 to play.  That would be as close as WSU would come the rest of the way.  The Bulldogs made their free throws down the stretch to put the final tally at 75-60.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Owens-White finished with 19 points, while Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) led WSU on the glass with 11 rebounds.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Five scored in double figures for Ferris State led by 18 from Logan Ryan.  Lee Higgins had 14 points, while Dorian Aluyi had 12 points.  Walt Kelser came in averaging over 20 points per game but Wayne State held him to just 11 on Saturday.  Davidson scored 10 points.

ONE BIG THING
Games continued to be decided at the free throw line and Saturday was another example of that.  WSU went 15-of-23 (65%) compared to FSU's 26-of-31 (84%) clip at the charity stripe.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will play at Saginaw Valley State on Thursday with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 PM inside O'Neill Arena.
