Women's Tennis Handles Michigan Tech, 6-1

WSU improved to 7-1 at home this season and 3-0 in the GLIAC.

DETROIT -- The No. 16-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (12-5 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) recorded a 6-1 victory over the Michigan Tech Huskies (2-13 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Duchene Athletic Facility in what was the second of four straight home matches for the squad.

It was the fourth straight win for the Warriors, which includes triumphs over Division I Oakland and three league schools in Saginaw Valley State, Lake Superior State, and MTU.

DOUBLES
While it was not a sweep for the Green and Gold in doubles, the Warriors did win two of the three matches to earn the first point of the afternoon session.

Over at the No. 2 spot, Shanice Weekes (London, England) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) collected a 6-3 win over Marina Fernandez and Katerina Khardina.  They improved to 3-0 together as a pairing, with all three victories in conference action.

Michigan Tech claimed the next finished contest, with Chiara Heinz and Emily Rose emerging with a 6-4 triumph over WSU's Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.).  Similar to Anais Ruyssen on Friday against Lake Superior State, Komar moved down to the No. 3 spot to play with the freshman Beaulieu for the first time.

In what was a close affair at the first flight, the No. 41-ranked Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) proved resilient with their tie-breaking 7-6 (7-2) victory vs. Emily Cojocaru and Caoimhe McDonnell.  That officially gave the Green and Gold a 1-0 advantage.

SINGLES
The Warriors nabbed five of six singles contests to secure their 6-1 win on Saturday.

Gorgidze finished first in an impressive effort at the fourth flight, with 6-1 and 6-2 set victories against Rose.

Playing at the second flight, the No. 70-ranked Marta Komar registered set wins of 6-3 and 6-2 to down McDonnell, while Szpakowska squared off with Bella Bigari and prevailed 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 position.  Szpakowska's victory was the clincher for Wayne State.

Arafat battled for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 triumph vs. Cojocaru at the first flight - a position that the sophomore played at for the first time this spring (and fourth in her two-season collegiate career).

The final winner for WSU was Beaulieu at the No. 6 spot, but it was not easy against Fernandez.  The freshman fell 7-6 (7-4) in the first set, before claiming a 6-4 win of her own in the second set.  The two played a 10-point super tiebreaker, with Beaulieu emerging victorious in a 10-3 decision.

The Huskies' lone point came via a Heinz win over Weekes (6-4, 6-4) at the fifth flight.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play the third match of its four-contest home stand against the GLIAC on Friday, April 12 against Grand Valley State.  The Warriors and Lakers will hope to play outside on the WSU Tennis Courts beginning at 2 p.m. following the men's action slated for 10 a.m.
