WSU Baseball Takes Series Finale, 8-2

The Warriors are now in third place in the GLIAC standings at 8-5.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (19-9, 8-5 GLIAC) completed the three-game sweep of Northwood (10-15, 3-9 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon with an 8-2 win behind a three RBI game from freshman Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle).

Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) singled in a run in the bottom of the first inning to give WSU a 1-0 lead.

NU tied the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI groundout.

The Warriors scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning including a bases-clearing double from Clifton, giving WSU a 5-1 lead.

Northwood applied some pressure in the top of the sixth inning, forcing David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) (2-2) to exit the game. Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio / Evergreen) replaced Frederick on the mound. The Timberwolves scored one run on two hits in the inning but stranded three runners on base. Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) entered to collect the final out of the inning.

Sorenson tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh inning. Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) tripled in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend WSU's lead to 7-2.

Jeremy Carrell scored on a passed pall for the Warriors eighth run of the game.

Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) pitched the final inning and retied the T-Wolves in order to seal the win.

The Green & Gold will host Urbana on Tuesday at 3 PM as the homestand continues.
