Late-Game Heroics Power Baseball to 5-2 Win

The Warriors will play again on Sunday at noon.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (33-20) won its second straight elimination game at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday, beating Drury (37-20) 5-2 at Gerace Stadium on the campus of Northwood University.  The Warriors scored all five runs in the seventh inning or later and turned three double plays to advance to Sunday's round of play.

Wayne State has won two NCAA Tournament games for the first time since 2011, when the Warriors won three games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) drew a walk and moved to second on a groundout.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) sent an RBI single into center field to plate the game's first run.  Starter Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (4-3) held the Panthers scoreless in the second and third innings.

- A walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch produced a two-run single to right field to give Drury a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning.  However, a 5-4-3 double play limited the damage and ended the rally.  The Panthers threatened again in the bottom of the sixth inning after a leadoff double and a sac bunt.  Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) entered the game from the bullpen and got two pop-ups, ending the frame.

- Harms smacked a leadoff single into left field to begin the seventh inning and Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) drew a walk before JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) bunted both runners over.  Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to right field.  Horn retired the side in order in the seventh inning.

- The Green & Gold seized the momentum with a two-out rally in the eighth inning.  Carrell drew a walk and hustled to second base to beat out the force play and keep the inning alive.  Harms put WSU up 4-2 with a two-run double over the left fielder's head.  It looked as though Drury would start the bottom of the eighth inning with an infield single but Horn executed a bare hand snag while sprinting to cover first base and retire the first batter.  The lefty then worked around a two-out single to keep the two-run lead in tact.

- A fielding error allowed Kelly to reach to begin the ninth inning and another well-executed bunt from Conti put Kelly in scoring position.  Rose doubled to the wall in left field to plate WSU's fifth run.  Horn worked a perfect bottom of the ninth inning to secure the win and collect his ninth save of the season.

AT THE PLATE
- Harms went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Rose posted a 2-for-3 day with two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Pawelek pitched five and a 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks.  Horn did not allow a run and struck out two batters.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will play either St. Joseph's or Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday beginning at noon.  With a win, WSU will play again following the noon game.
