CJ Maury's RBI Single Wins it for Warriors

The teams traded runs throughout the contest but Wayne State won 6-5.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (19-8, 6-2 GLIAC) won 6-5 over Saginaw Valley State (16-12, 7-3 GLIAC) on a walk-off RBI single from CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A throwing error and wild pitch allowed SVSU to get on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Cardinals scored two runs on three hits and an error in the top of the second to take a 3-1 advantage.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) sent a double down the left line in the bottom of the second inning that scored two runs as the Green & Gold tied the contest at 3-3.

Three hits and an error gave Saginaw Valley State a 4-3 lead in the top of the third.  However, Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) did well to limit the damage to one run and leave two runners on base.

Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) smacked a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning, tying the game at 4-4.

A leadoff walk came around to score in the top of the seventh inning as the Cards regained a one-run advantage.  Once again, WSU had an answer. Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout.  A SVSU error allowed the tying run to cross in the bottom of the seventh inning.  WSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with no outs but were unable to break the dead lock.

Austin Schweiger doubled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning but that would be all of the offense for SVSU.

Ramirez singled to left to start the bottom of the ninth and reached second base on a balk.  Heads up base running from Ramirez allowed him to advance to third on a groundout to the left side.  An inside-out swing from Maury dropped into right field and the Warriors came charging out of the dugout after the walk-off RBI single.

AT THE PLATE
Ramirez went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Miller posted two hits and an RBI.  WSU hit three home runs and those belonged to MacLean, Ramirez and DeLanoy.  Zimmerman and Miller each had a double.

ON THE MOUND
Fitzpatrick allowed four runs (one earned) in five innings and struck out four batters.  Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) allowed a run in his two and 2/3 innings of work.

Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) (2-0) was sharp, striking out three in an inning and 1/3 of scoreless relief.

UP NEXT
Wayne State and SVSU will play twice on Sunday to conclude the series.
