Men's Tennis Defeats Malone For Weekend Sweep

The Warriors win their third straight match, improving to 8-2 in the GLIAC.

-- The Wayne State University men's tennis team completed a three-match, weekend sweep Sunday, earning a 9-0 victory over visiting Malone University at the WSU Tennis Courts.

The Warriors (9-7 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) won their third match in as many days at home, with the win over the Pioneers. Wayne State also defeated Lake Erie and Walsh, on Friday and Saturday. WSU lost at just one flight over the weekend, beating its opponents by a combined score of 26-1. Wayne State has also won six of its past seven dual matches overall and is in second place in the GLIAC regular-season standings behind Northwood.

Wayne State swept the doubles matches Sunday before winning all six singles matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and freshman Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) earned an 8-2 victory. Sophomore Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) and senior Gopinath Menta (Hyderabad, India) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, while freshmen Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) and Ryan Carlson (Armada, Mich. / Armada) cruised to an 8-0 triumph at the third flight in doubles.

The Warriors rolled to six straight-set wins in singles to close out the match.

Charriere improved to 6-1 at No. 1 singles and a team-leading 15-6 overall this season in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Malone's Youssef ElSonbaty. Robineau won his fourth-straight singles match at the No. 2 flight, earning an 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Senior Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) dropped just one game at the third flight, winning 6-1, 6-0. Junior Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Carlson won his third singles match of the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles and Menta didn't drop a game en route to a his fourth-straight singles win in conference play.

The Warriors have one regular season match remaining and it looms large in the GLIAC standings. WSU is set to host first-place Northwood in Detroit on April 21 for a 2 p.m. match.
