DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program will host its annual summer camp on July 29-30 at the WSU Baseball Field and Multipurpose Indoor Facility in Detroit. Campers will receive fundamental instruction in all aspects of the game, plus have a chance to meet players from the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers scheduled to appear this year are Torii Hunter and Max Scherzer as guests of Tigers' pitching coach and camp clinician Jeff Jones. Other Tigers could be added as the camp approaches, so stay tuned!

Past Tigers guests have included Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, Curtis Granderson, Torii Hunter, Brandon Inge, Doug Fister, Austin Jackson, Victor Martinez, Rick Porcello, Pudge Rodriguez, Jose Valverde and Justin Verlander.

Clinicians for the camp will include WSU head coach Ryan Kelley and Detroit Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones, as well as local high school coaches and Wayne State baseball student-athletes and coaches. Camp participants will learn from an open camp environment where questions are encouraged.

Scherzer was the AL Cy Young Award winner last year going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA. He struck out 240 batters in 214 1/3 innings and is off to an 8-3 start in 2014. Hunter is a nine-time Gold Glove Award winner and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He has collected over 2,200 hits in his 17-year professional career including 323 home runs and 1,262 RBI.

Jones has over 30 years of experience in professional baseball, including over 20 as a pitching coach in the Detroit Tigers organization. Jones has been a big part of bringing Cy Young and MVP awards to Detroit. He was named the Tigers' bullpen coach in 2006, marking his fifth stint in that capacity, before being promoted to pitching coach in 2011.

Jones had previously served seven consecutive seasons as the pitching coach for the Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit's Triple A minor league affiliate. His professional coaching career began with the Tigers organization in 1989.

Selected by Oakland in the 13th round of the June 1977 draft, his pitching career spanned 11 seasons (1977-87). He attended Southgate High School, helping lead his team to the Wyandotte League title in 1974.

This camp provides an organized station and drill work system featuring a fundamental approach to all aspects of the game including pitching, infield instruction, outfield play, baserunning, bunting, hitting and catching. Camp participants will be exposed to drills and concepts to help elevate their game. Drills and instruction from the professional, collegiate and youth levels will be featured. Participants will be able to meet and learn from members of the Detroit Tigers while also working with baseball representatives from the NCAA level.

This past spring, the Warrior baseball team won 30+ games for the fifth consecutive year. WSU, a league title contender year-in and year-out, finished with a 22-9 GLIAC record and clinched a berth in the GLIAC Tournament for the10th time in the last 11 years.  The Warriors competed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in last five seasons and opened the NCAA tournament with a 1-0 victory over GLVC Champions Drury.

The camp costs $75 per day for registrations received before July 21. Campers should be dressed prepared for baseball practice and are advised to bring their own equipment, if possible. The camp is open to ages 7-18.
