Women’s Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision To Grand Valley State

WSU closes out the fall with a fourth place finish in the GLIAC.

Box Score

The Wayne State women's tennis team attempt for a third-place finish at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference tournament was denied Sunday as Grand Valley State defeated WSU 5-4 at the MSU Tennis Facility.

The second seeded Lakers claimed the match by recording one doubles win and four singles wins. This was just the second match of the tournament that needed all nine points to be played out to decide a winner.

The loss drops WSU's record to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the GLIAC while Grand Valley State improved to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the GLIAC. GVSU defeated Wayne State 5-4 earlier this season as well.

The match began in great fashion for the Warriors as the No. 1 doubles pairing Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic produced an 8-6 win over Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout. The win was the 12th of the season for Gill and Vuksanovic. The duo is now tied for second place all-time with Dee Mays in WSU history in career doubles victories with 47.

Wayne State also found success in No. 2 doubles when McCall Monte and Kristina Goranskaya came away with an 8-3 win over Katelyn Schaffer and Tara Hayes. Goranskaya and Monte end the fall with 11 wins.

Grand Valley State was able to get its first point of the day in No. 3 doubles when Rachel Rendina and Jackie Shipman bested WSU's Jennifer Bradford and Debora Correa 8-1. Despite the defeat, the Warriors took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Gill was able to down Hayes 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 flight while Goranskaya notched her 11th singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Schaffer in No. 2 singles. However, that would be the final win of the day for WSU.

Johnston defeated Vuksanovic 6-3, 6-2 and Trout beat Monte 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively. GVSU also picked up a win in No. 6 singles as Rendina defeated Bradford 6-1, 6-1.

Correa just missed grabbing Wayne State's fifth point of the day, but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-7 (0-6), 7-5 to Jackie Shipman in No. 5 singles.

Sunday concludes Wayne State's fall schedule.
