23-2 Run Keys Oilers Win Over Walsh

The University of Findlay men's basketball team defeated Walsh University by a score of 77-64 on Feb. 19 in Croy Gymnasium. The win gives the Oilers a 14-10 record on the season with an 11-9 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The Oilers built a 37-33 lead at the break and then came out firing in the second half as they opened the final period on a 23-2. Their big run gave them a 60-35 lead with just under 12 minutes to play, but the Cavaliers would not go quietly as they chopped the lead down to 12 with 4:28 to play. The Oilers would not allow them to get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way as they improved to 10-3 at home this season.

Senior forward Jake Heagen paced the Oilers with 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. He made 8-of-15 shot attempts from the field and canned 6-of-9 tries from three point range. His six three pointers were a new career-high.

Junior forward John Staley added 17 points and seven rebounds while junior guard Dylan Kaufman nearly recorded a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Kaufman's eight rebounds tied his career-high while his seven assists established a new career-best.

Freshman guard Elijah Kahlig had eight points while sophomore guard Ricardo Smith had five points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Oilers shot 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the floor and drilled 12-of-24 (50%) tries from long distance in the win.

The Cavaliers, who shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the floor, received 16 points from Zac Carter.

The Oilers will hit the road to face Malone University in their next game on Saturday. The game is scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. in Canton, Ohio.
