The Malone University baseball team split its home doubleheader against Wayne State (MI) University on Tuesday at Thurman Munson Stadium.  The Pioneers picked up a 4-2 victory in game one thanks to another strong outing by starting pitcher Taylore Baker.  The Warriors then used a seven-run seventh inning to pull away for an 11-5 triumph in game two.

Following Tuesday's action, Malone's record moved to 12-14 overall and 7-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while Wayne State now owns a 16-8 overall mark and a 5-4 record in conference play.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series at Munson Stadium on Wednesday with a single, nine-inning game starting at 12:00 p.m.

Game One Recap
Baker went the distance on the mound for the Pioneers in the opener, limiting the Warriors to a pair of unearned runs on seven hits.  The senior right-hander, who threw a complete-game shutout against rival Walsh University last week, was nearly as dominant on Tuesday, improving his record to 4-2 on the season after striking out seven while walking just two.

Malone did all of its offensive damage in the second inning.  Third baseman Jon Crank and leftfielder Hayden Mobley led off the frame with back-to-back singles.  Designated hitter Michael Chack brought home the first run with a double to right.  Catcher Matt Davis followed with a single up the middle to score Mobley.  A passed ball allowed Chack to race home with the third run before second baseman Austin Pachan drove home Davis after reaching on a Warrior fielding error.

Wayne State managed to get on the scoreboard in the fourth, plating two runs after a two-out Pioneer fielding miscue.

The Warriors then put two runners on base in each of the final three innings, but Baker worked out of trouble each time, preserving the 4-2 victory.

The Pioneers notched 10 hits in the game.  Mobley led the way, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.  Davis added a pair of hits, including his RBI single in the second and a double in the sixth.

Game Two Recap
The Pioneers entered the top of the seventh inning of game two trailing by a slim 4-3 margin before Wayne State erupted for seven runs with the help of five base hits and three Malone errors.

A two-run double by Chack pulled the hosts to within 11-5 in the bottom of the seventh but that was as close as the Pioneers would get.

Malone held an early 3-1 lead after plating three runs in the second inning.  Leftfielder Ryan Froman and shortstop Kyler King brought home the first two scores with RBI singles.  Pachan then plated the third run with an RBI fielder's choice.

The Warriors made it 3-2 with a sacrifice fly in the third and then pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Right-hander Jack McDonald started on the mound and suffered the loss (2-2) after yielding four runs on three hits over the first 3.1 innings.
