Gill Sets Record, Women’s Tennis Beats Valpo 6-1

VALPARAISO, IN - The Wayne State women's tennis team closed out its regular season on Monday by defeating Valparaiso 6-1. The highlight of the day was Sharon Gill, who broke the school record for singles wins in a career with her victory.

In just three short years, Gill has accumulated 63 wins. Former teammate Dee Mays previously held the record with 62 wins.

The Warriors (15-5, 6-3 GLIAC) began the contest by taking two of three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

At No. 1 doubles, Gill and Kristina Goranskaya were 8-1 winners against Abby Wright and Brittany O'Reilly. Gill and Goranskaya close out the regular season with a record of 6-0.

After WSU's Debora Correa and Medha Jha lost 8-1 from the third flight, the Warriors' No. 2 team of McCall Monte and Milena Vuksanovic bested Katie Bilyeu and Camill Burden 8-4. Since joining forces earlier in the spring, Monte and Vuksanovic have went 5-1.

Gill's record-breaking win came in the form of a 6-1, 6-0 victory rover Wright from the first flight to start singles play. Gill has a season record of 19-3 and has won eight consecutive matches.

Goranskaya picked up her 17th win of the season from the second flight by defeating Brittany O'Reilly 6-2, 6-1.

Wayne State also claimed wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles as Vuksanovic and Monte won 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0 respectively.

Jha earned her second singles win of the season and got the Warriors their final point of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win from the sixth flight over Christine Antrobus.

WSU will now wait to see if they are selected to participate in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in May. The top eight teams from the region advance to the tournament.
