Women's Tennis Claims Third Straight Victory in 7-0 Shutout of Lake Superior State

WSU posted its fourth 7-0 win of the spring season on Friday.

DETROIT -- The No. 16-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (11-5 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) shut out visiting Lake Superior State (3-8 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) 7-0 on Friday afternoon inside the Duchene Athletic Facility in the second of seven league games this season.

WSU pushed its winning streak to three matches with the decision, which includes another 7-0 victory vs. Oakland and a 5-2 triumph at Saginaw Valley State last week.

DOUBLES
For the third straight affair, the Green and Gold swept doubles to nab an early 1-0 edge.

The action at the third flight was first to finish, which included a rare appearance at the flight from Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France).  Ruyssen teamed with Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) for a 6-0 decision against Julia Fraile Raton and Martina Oviedo.  For Ruyssen, it was her first appearance at the No. 3 doubles spot in her Wayne State career.

Jumping up to the first position for the match was Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland), who entered the match as the No. 41-ranked duo in Division II.  They defeated Tayla Brasier and Trinity Ly 6-3 in what was Szpakowska's first action at the top spot in her collegiate career.

Adding another 6-3 triumph was the tandem of Shanice Weekes (London, England) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) at the No. 2 spot over Maddie Whip and Valentina Parodi.

SINGLES
The Warriors were dominant in singles, as they won all six contests and allowed just 15 game points to their LSSU opponents.

Szpakowska did not allow anything in her match-up with Ly, as the sophomore posted back-to-back 6-0 wins at the No. 3 spot to finish first.  It was her first ever singles match at the position.

Ruyssen, who entered the day ranked 19th in the country, won 6-1, 6-0 against Brasier at the first flight.

Over at the No. 2 position, Arafat tallied a 6-4 triumph vs. Whip, before blanking the Lake Superior State player 6-0 in the second set for the Green and Gold's third point.

The clinching point on the afternoon belonged to Gorgidze, with the redshirt sophomore collecting set a pair of 6-2 set wins against Parodi at the fourth flight.

Weekes faced Fraile Raton at the No. 5 position and triumphed 6-1, 6-1, while Beaulieu squared off with Oviedo and had wins of 6-0 and 6-4 at the No. 6 spot to wrap up the day.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will continue its four-match home stand on Saturday against Michigan Tech, with first serve set for 2 p.m. following the men's match against the Huskies.  It will be WSU's third GLIAC contest of the campaign.
