Offense Leads Baseball to Game Two Victory and Series Split

Wayne State took game two at Grand Valley State on Thursday, 11-5.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (25-20, 17-11 GLIAC) and Grand Valley State (29-13-1, 20-6 GLIAC) finally completed the regular-season series on Thursday after having rain outs in April and on Wednesday.  Wayne State's bats went cold in game one with just two base hits in a 6-0 defeat.  However, the offense came alive to help WSU earn an 11-5 win in 12 innings during game two.

Wayne State improves to 4-1 in extra-inning contests this season and also snapped GVSU's 10-game winning streak.  The Warriors are looking to strengthen their GLIAC Tournament resume during the final week of the season.  WSU is currently in line for one of the two 'wild card' spots as the top two seeds in the North and South Divisions have already been claimed.

GAME ONE at GRAND VALLEY STATE (L, 0-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Both teams were held quiet through the first three innings.  A Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Stevenson) single up the middle nearly produced a run in the but Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.  Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) struck out a GVSU batter and Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) completed the double play by throwing out a base runner trying to steal second to end the inning.  Bad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) drew a one-out walk in the top of the third inning and advanced to second on a passed ball.  However, the Lakers used a double play of their own to end the inning as Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) lined out sharply to third and Baldwin was caught venturing too far off of second base.

- Consecutive singles by GVSU to start the bottom of the fourth inning put runners on the corners and a run scored on a 6-4-3 double play to give the Lakers the first run of the contest.  A pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the fifth inning had the home team looking to add to their lead.  A failed rundown after a strikeout led to GVSU's second run and an RBI single to left center gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead after five innings.  A two-run home run from Matt Williams gave the home team a 5-0 lead and knocked Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (2-3) out of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The inning continued with an RBI double to right center for GVSU's sixth run.

- The Warriors went down in order in the top of the seventh inning as GVSU won its 10th straight game.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Loconsole and Jorah accounted for the two Warrior hits.

ON THE MOUND
- Waldrop allowed five earned runs in five innings on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five batters.
- Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) tossed the final inning and allowed an earned run on two hits.

GAME TWO at GRAND VALLEY STATE (W, 11-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- GVSU scored two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning to jump out to an early lead.  Jorah singled to left field to begin the top of the third inning and advanced to second on Justin Sherman's (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) sacrifice bunt.  An RBI single from Baldwin cut GVSU's deficit in half, 2-1.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) entered the game in the bottom of the second inning and kept the Lakers quiet in the second and third innings, despite two GVSU hits in the third.

- Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2.  Another leadoff home run, this one from Baldwin in the top of the sixth inning gave the Green & Gold a 3-2 advantage.  GVSU tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

- After a single and a double by the Warriors, Sherman reached on a fielding error, which allowed a run to score.  Another RBI groundout extended WSU's lead to 5-3.  The Lakers scored two runs on a hit and a walk to tie the game at 5-5 after seven innings.  The eighth and ninth innings were scoreless but were anything but uneventful.  The current GLIAC North Pitcher of the Week Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (7-4) came in from the bullpen to get the final two outs of the ninth pushing the game to extra innings. The inning also included Jorah saving the game with a play in the hole at shortstop, turning to fire a strike to second base for the second out and keep the game tied.  The third out was recorded on a ball that looked to heading towards center field but hit the pitcher's mound and right into the glove of the second baseman.

- Kinch kept GVSU off the bases in the 10th inning by striking out the side.  The Warriors threatened in the top of the 11th inning with two walks but were unable to secure the go-ahead run.  Kinch struck out five straight batters until a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning snapped the streak.  However, Kinch responded with his sixth punch out in two and 2/3 innings.  Sherman sent a single through the right side to begin the 12th inning and moved to second base on a Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) sacrifice bunt.  Baldwin gave WSU a 6-5 lead with a single into right center.  After a double from Harms and an intentional walk to Conti loaded the bases, Kelly was hit by a pitch to plate WSU's seventh run.  Mergener delivered the knockout blow with a three-run triple to give WSU a 10-5 lead.  Jorah's third hit of the game netted the sixth run of the inning for WSU.

- Kinch returned to the mound in the bottom of the 12th inning to collect his seventh strikeout and end the game to secure a series split with the Lakers.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Baldwin and Mergener both drove in four runs, both launching solo home runs.
- Jorah went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- WSU used seven pitchers in the game.  Conti pitched the first inning and allowed two earned runs.
- Pawelek, Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.), Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.), Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.), and Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) all recorded outs for the Warriors.
- Kinch was by far the most effective, striking out seven in three and 2/3 innings and allowed just one base runner to earn the victory in his first relief appearance of the season.

UP NEXT
- The Warriors will begin a four-game series with Malone on Sunday at noon and conclude the regular season on Monday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
