Volleyball Sweeps Tiffin to Begin GLIAC Play

The Warriors hit .392 during the 3-0 win over the Dragons.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (5-4 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) returned to the Matthaei on Friday night to begin league competition against Tiffin (5-4 overall, 0-1 GLIAC).  The Warriors cruised past Tiffin, winning in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-16, respectively.  WSU hit an impressive .392 for the match and had four Warriors finish with at least 10 kills in a match that lasted 75 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Dragons won the opening point, but Wayne State set the tone for the rest of the night with an 8-0 run to answer.  TU would come back and tie the set at 10-10 but the Green & Gold were too much and extended its lead to 17-12 after a pair of kills by Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield).  WSU held off a late rally by Tiffin to win the first set 25-17 on a point from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron).

- The home team won the first six points of the second set highlighted by two aces from Richardson.  The lead grew to 15-4 following a 6-0 run by WSU.  Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) gave the Warriors a 20-8 advantage with a kill, and after a point by the Dragons, the Warriors would take five of the final seven points to win 25-11.

- It was the same story in the third set as WSU won 10 of the first 13 points to lead 10-3.  The Dragons were struggling to find clean swings as the Warriors' defense was just as solid as the offense.  Another point from Asiedu gave WSU a 17-10 lead before Tiffin trimmed the home lead to 17-13 and eventually 18-15.  Momentum swung back to the Green & Gold bench and Wayne State won seven of the final eight points to secure the sweep with a 25-16 victory.

MEDAL OF HONOR UNIFORM SERIES
- Throughout this academic year's celebration of 100 years of WSU athletics dating back to Detroit Junior College in 1918, each of the 18 athletic teams will have an apparel item with patches representing both the WSU 100th anniversary logo as well as the Medal of Honor logo, in addition to the name of a Medal of Honor recipient.  Four hundred twelve (412) Medal of Honor recipient names were selected to represent each branch of the military, including the only female recipient (Mary Walker of the U.S. Army).  The volleyball team debuted special warm-up tops with a Medal of Honor recipient name on the right sleeve on Friday night.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Krenz and Richardson both finished with 12 kills to lead the quartet of Warriors with at least 10 kills.  Asiedu and Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) each tallied 10.  The efficiency numbers were eye-popping as Krenz posted a .588 hitting percentage, while Asiedu notched a .500 hitting percentage mark.  Asiedu entered the match leading the league and ranked 14th in Division II with a .432 hitting percentage, a number that will rise after Friday night's performance.

UP NEXT
- The Warriors conclude the quick home stand on Saturday versus Ashland at 2:00 p.m.
