Volleyball Rolls to Sweep Over SVSU

The Warriors collect their ninth sweep of the season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (16-5 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) bested Saginaw Valley State (12-8 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) in three sets on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors used an impressive all-around effort to win by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led 3-0 to open the first set.  A kill from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and an ace from Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) put the home team up 9-6.  The teams traded punches until the set was deadlocked at 13-13.  The Green & Gold used a 7-0 run to go out in front 20-13.  VanderWal propelled the Warriors during the rally with three kills.  SVSU would trim the deficit to two, 20-18, but WSU responded by winning five of te last seven points to win 25-20.  Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) posted a pair of kills down the stretch.

The Cardinals led the second set 7-4 after a Wayne State blocking error.  A kill from VanderWal started a 5-0 run to push WSU ahead 9-7.  A service ace from Shell made it 13-10 before another ace by Benoit pushed the Warriors' advantage to 17-15.  Saginaw Valley State tied the set at 19-19 but Wayne State once again had an answer.  Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) started to find her footing and back-to-back kills made it 21-19.  Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) ended the set with a kill to give WSU a 25-20 victory.

A block by VanderWal plus a SVSU setting error gave the Warriors an 8-2 lead to begin the third set.  WSU stretched its advantage to 15-7 and 18-9 after a kill by Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian).  However, the Cards has one more run left in them,  SVSU would come back and tie the set at 22-22.  Wayne State found a way to win after a point from Shell plus back-to-back kills from Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal reminded fans why she is an offensive force after missing the past few weeks with an injury.  The redshirt senior posted a match-high 15 kills and hit .306 for the match.  Kray added 12 kills, while hitting .333.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 46 assists, while Wagner tallied a match-best 19 digs.

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
"Nice win for the Warriors today over one of our rivals," said head coach Tim Koth.  "We always enjoy competing against them and today our transition offensive was pretty solid. We got a great performance from Lauren after returning from her injury!"
