Baseball Splits Final Day of Regular Season

The Warriors will enter the GLIAC Tournament as the two-seed on Thursday.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (31-17, 20-10 GLIAC) split the final day of the regular season at Walsh (32-16, 19-11 GLIAC) on Sunday after not being able to play Saturday's contents due to rainy conditions.  WSU fell 8-5 in game one before winning a shootout in game two, 15-14.

GAME ONE (L, 5-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Walsh scored twice in the bottom of the first inning before Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) sent a solo home run over the left field wall to trim deficit to one.  An RBI single from Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) in the top of the third inning tied the game at 2-2 but the Cavaliers regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning.

-  Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead with a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning and JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) extended the lead to 5-3 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.  Walsh exploded for five runs on four hits, including a walk-off three-run home run to end the game.

AT THE PLATE
- Kelly went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Sherman also posted a two-hit game and drove in two runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) started and lasted four innings and struck out five batters, allowing three earned runs.  Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) (2-2) allowed five earned runs in two and 2/3 innings.

GAME TWO (W, 15-14)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors jumped all over the home team in the top of the first inning in game two with four runs on two hits and two WU error.  Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) highlighted the rally with a two-run double down the right field line.  The Cavs picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead with four runs on two hits and a WSU error in the bottom of the second inning.

-  Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single through the right side in the top of the third inning.  After Walsh took a 6-5 lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) connected for his first home run as a Warrior to give WSU a 7-6 lead.  Another solo homer from Walsh tied the contest at 7-7 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

- Walsh broke the 7-7 tie with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning but Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) and Conti hit back-to-back home runs to give the visitors an 11-9 advantage.  However, the Cavs scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 14-11 lead.

- The Green & Gold scored four runs on three hits, including a three-run home run from Kelly in the top of the eighth inning to take a 15-14 lead.

AT THE PLATE
- A  total of seven home runs were hit during the game with WSU connect for four of them.  Carrell and Baldwin both collected three hits, while Harms and Kelly drove in three runs.  Adams scored four runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) started and allowed five earned runs on two and a 1/3 innings before Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) allowed three earned runs in two and 2/3 innings.  Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) entered but not retire a batter and was tagged for four runs.  Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) (4-1) was effective in his three innings of work, striking out four batters and allowing an earned run.  Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the season.

UP NEXT
- The second-seeded Wayne State Warriors will meet the fifth-seeded Grand Valley State Lakers on Thursday to begin the GLIAC Tournament.  The teams split the four regular season meetings.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
