Women's Basketball Falls To Wayne State 83-58 In Home Game

Sophomore guard Selana Reale led Malone with 17 points as Malone suffered an 83-58 defeat to Wayne State on Wednesday.

The Malone University women's basketball team lost a home contest to visiting Wayne State University (MI) by the score of 83-58 on Wednesday evening in Malone's Osborne Hall.  With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 5-4 overall on the season and to 2-4 in the GLIAC while the Warriors improved to 4-3 and to 4-1 in GLIAC play.

In the first half, the battle was close through the first nine minutes with the visitors holding a slight 13-10 lead with 11:56 left in the period.  But from that point, the Warriors slowly pulled away to post a 34-23 halftime advantage.

In the second stanza, WSU score the first nine points to go up by 20 but Malone trimmed the lead back to 13, at 67-54, with 5:21 remaining. From that point, though, the Warriors closed out the game with a 16-4 run to secure their 83-58 victory.

Guard Selana Reale paced Malone with 17 points while guard Audrey Myers followed with 11 points. Guard Deborah Simmers also reached twin figures with 10 points, including netting a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line.  In addition, guard Logan Pastor tossed in eight points while also yanking down a team-high six rebounds and dishing out a team-best three assists.

Paige Sickmiller led the Warriors in scoring with 20 points followed by Talisha Bridges with 18 points. Bridges paced WSU in rebounds with seven.

Malone connected on 36.4% (16-44) of its field goal attempts while Wayne State held a solid percentage lead, hitting 54.0% (34-63) of its tries. The teams were identical from long range as both squads were 3-of 14 from three-point land.  At the foul line, the Pioneers held the advantage, converting 23 of 31 attempts for 74.2% while the Warriors were 12 of 18 for 66.7%.  The visitors dominated the game on the boards, though, with a 40-22 rebounding margin of victory.

Malone will next compete against Grove City College (PA), which is currently 3-4 overall, in a contest played at Quickens Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, December 28th at 2:30 p.m.  Live stats and live audio will be available for this contest.
