Malone Softball Falters Against Millersville University But Responds With a Big Victory over West Liberty in Virginia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Malone University softball team (8-4-1) participated in two blowouts in the second day of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday, losing the first one to Millersville University (PA) 14-1 in five innings before bouncing back for a 15-2 win in five innings over West Liberty University (WV) later in the evening.

Sophomore Desi Hengoed recorded Malone's only two hits in the loss to Millersville, while freshman Erika Gerber plated the lone run when she reached base via a Millersville error. Junior Jillian Coyle (5-2) was dealt the loss, allowing nine runs (five earned) in 2 2/3 innings.

The second game was a completely different story for Malone. The Pioneers generated 15 runs of offense, 10 of which came in the fifth inning, to cruise to the lop-sided victory. The 15 runs were more than enough for Junior Stephanie Byrne who upped her record to 3-2 by allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of work.

The freshmen trio of Allison Mercado, Erika Gerber, and Juliana Shultes led the offensive onslaught with two hits each, while Hengoed lifted a two-run shot in the first inning for her first home run of the season.

Barring bad weather, Malone will return to Canton to take on Point Park University (PA) in its home opener this Tuesday, Mar. 18th. The first pitch of game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
