Softball Allows Last Five Runs in 6-5 Setback to St. Cloud

Omelanchuk goes 3-for-4 and drives in a run.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (1-6 overall) fell 6-5 Saturday afternoon to St. Cloud State (12-7) in its first game of the 2011 Rebel Spring Games.  The Warriors have lost five games in which they held the lead at one point.

Sophomore catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) led off the top of the second with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore center fielder Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston).  After a strikeout, freshman second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) recorded her first collegiate RBI with a single scoring Omelanchuk.

WSU added to its lead with a pair of runs in the third.  Junior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) and junior right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had back-to-back singles leading off the frame.  Histed scored when junior infielder Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) reached on a throwing error.  Following a fielder's choice, Omelanchuk plated Allen with a single.

The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the innings with three consecutive one-out singles followed by a sacrifice fly.

The Warriors made it a 5-1 contest with two runs in the top of the fourth.  Fulton had a leadoff walk but was erased on a fielder's choice.  Following a ground out, Allen smacked her second home run of the season and 22nd of her career to move past Sue Verbeem (2003-06) into second place on WSU's all-time list, just one behind Amanda Jennings (1996-99).  Freshman left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) also scored on Allen's two-run blast.

SCSU responded with a five-run fourth inning.  Back-to-back one-out singles preceded a fly out.  A two-out walk followed by a WSU plated one unearned run.  Mikayla Hogan then hit a grand slam for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Wayne State had at least one runner left on base in each of the final three innings but could not push across the equalizer.

WSU junior Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) allowed eight hits in six innings but just one of the six runs were earned.  She struck out two and walked one but saw her record drop to 0-5.

Alyssa Roberts (4-5) earned the win in relief for the Huskies.  Roberts and starter Chris Saiz combined for two strikeouts and one walk.

Omelanchuk led the Warriors with three hits and an RBI, while Allen and junior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) each had two hits.

Wayne State will play 23rd-ranked Minnesota State Mankato later today.
