DETROIT -- A pair of walk-off wins for the Wayne State University baseball team (29-11, 17-7 GLIAC) over Tiffin (12-28, 11-12 GLIAC) on Wednesday afternoon puts WSU a win away the 30-win plateau for the eight time in program history and the sixth time in the last seven years. The Warriors won both ends of the doubleheader, 3-2.
Game One (W, 3-2)The Dragons struck first in the series opener with a run in the first inning on a double off of starting pitcher
David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview). Tiffin would add to its lead in the top of fourth inning with an RBI single through the left side.
The Warriors tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) singled in a run and
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) followed with an RBI double down the left field line.
Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) (1-0) replaced Frederick in the top of the sixth inning and would pick up his first win of the season, throwing two scoreless innings.
Harms led off the bottom of the seventh inning with an infield single and the Tiffin starter Daniel Sexton plunked the next two batters to load the bases for
Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova). Cunningham won the game with an infield single RBI down the first-base line.
Frederick allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out three Dragons.
Game Two (W, 3-2)Both teams went scoreless through the first two innings to begin game two. A Warrior fielding error allowed two runs to score in the top of the third inning to give Tiffin the early 2-0 lead.
Starter
Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) would settle in and kept the deficit at two with three scoreless innings.
WSU tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) drew a bases-loaded walk for the inning's first run and
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) followed with a single through the right side.
Kyle Durham led off the top of the seventh inning with a double down the left field line to force head coach
Ryan Kelley to go to his bullpen in the form of
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) (3-2). Ruch retired the first three batters he faced to keep the game tied.
A.J. Matos (Southgate, Mich. / Detroit Western) drew a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the seventh inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pinch runner
Randy Kuzdak (Redford, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) advanced to third on a passed ball. An intention walk to Carrell put runners on the corners for
Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle). Clifton hit a sharp groundball to third base and would reach on a fielder's choice as he would beat out the potential double play, allowing Kuzdak to score the game-winning run.
Carrell went 2-for-3 in game two, raising his batting average to .419, which ranks second in the league. Hall went six innings and allowed two unearned runs while striking out five Dragons.
The Warriors will travel to first-place Lake Erie (25-14, 19-7 GLIAC) for three games this weekend.
