Huskies Earn First Women's Tennis Win of 2014-15

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech got strong performances from its entire squad today to beat Ashland 7-2 in GLIAC women's tennis. The Huskies won the top two doubles flights and the top five singles flights to improve to 1-3 on the young season.

The match of the day may have been at No. 2 doubles, where Erika and Emilia Tenizbaeva combined for an 8-4 victory. The sisters won four of the last five games in the pro set for their first win of the season. That match gave Tech a 2-1 lead after doubles (the Huskies won at No. 1 while the Eagles won at No. 3).

"It was really nice to get that second doubles win heading into singles," said Tech coach Kevin Kalinec. "It takes the pressure off a little bit in singles.

"Erika and Emilia played about as well as I've seen them play. As a team, we've been working in practice on attacking more, especially in doubles. It paid off today."

No. 1 Kwang Suthijindawong continued her unbeaten streak with another 6-0, 6-0 win. The junior is now 28-0 in her career in GLIAC singles matches.

Sandra Cvetanovic played to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, while fellow newcomer Natalia Parra-Alvarez was also a straight set winner at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2).

Both Tenizbaevas won in third-set tiebreakers. Emilia was a 6-4, 4-6, 14-12 victor at No. 3. Erika gained a 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 triumph at No. 5.

Michigan Tech will finish off its weekend home stand with a 10 a.m. start vs. Walsh tomorrow (Sept. 13).
