Volleyball Falls in Five at Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (8-6 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) hit the road on Friday night for the first time since the opening weekend of the season on Aug. 24-25 and the Warriors lost to Parkside (4-10 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) in five sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers won the first 10 points of the opening set and eventually forced WSU to take its second timeout of the set after extending their lead to 13-4.  The home advantage grew to 21-6 as Parkside would take a 1-0 match lead with a 25-9 victory.

Wayne State trailed 5-1 to start the second set but a 3-0 run by the Warriors tied the game at 7-7.  A block by Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) gave WSU a 17-12 lead and completed a 6-0 rally.  A kill from Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) pushed the Green & Gold lead to 21-15.  Parkside trimmed the deficit to three before Wayne State led 24-20 after a combo block from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.).  The Rangers cut the visitors lead to one, 24-23, but a Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) point gave WSU a 25-23 win.

A WSU block staked the Warriors to a 5-2 lead early in the third set.  A kill from Fike gave Wayne State a 10-6 lead but Parkside would come back to tie the game at 11-11.  The Green & Gold answered with a 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from Richardson and Malewicz.  WSU would go on to win 25-18 and take a 2-1 match lead.

Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) gave WSU a 7-4 lead in the fourth set with a service ace.  Parkside stormed back to take a 10-9 lead and eventually 17-13.  Wayne State pulled within two, 21-19, but the Rangers would go on to win the set, 25-23, to force a decisive fifth set.

In the race to 15, the Warriors trailed 7-5 but WSU responded with a 3-0 run to regain an 8-7 lead.  Parkside won five of the next six points to lead 12-9.  Richardson kept the Warriors alive with a kill to trim Parkside's lead to 14-12 but the Rangers captured the final point to win the match 3-2.
