Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Lake Erie, 5-2 and 6-2

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Wayne State University softball team (6-0 overall) continued its season-opening road trip on Wednesday with a pair of wins at Lake Erie College (3-12 overall).  The Warriors won the opener 5-2 and the nightcap 6-2.

GAME ONE RECAP
The host Storm took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an error, a walk and back-to-back one-out singles by Kiya Smith and Jesse Carpenter.

WSU tied the game in the top of the third with a pair of runs.  Senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a leadoff infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.).  Myers moved to third on a groundout and scored on a two-run home run to center field by sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse).

The Warriors grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth thanks to three singles.  Adams had a leadoff single and pinch-runner Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) went to second on a two-out single by senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.).  Senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) plated Miller with an RBI single up the middle thanks to a great slide around the plate by Miller.

Wayne State extended its advantage to 5-2 in the top of the sixth.  Senior designated player Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) reached on an error and pinch-runner Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. Riverside-Brookfield) went to third on a single by senior outfielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.).  WSU had back-to-back RBI groundouts by Myers and Adams.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior hurler Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) went the distance to improve to 3-0.  She struck out eight and walked one while allowing one earned run.  Ameel retired 10 of the final 11 Storm batters.

Grace Hammer (2-5) tossed a complete game for Lake Erie.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Nadolny had two hits, both for extra bases (double and home run), while Psenicka and Clayton each had two singles.

LEADING THE STORM
Four different players had a single with Carpenter having both RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
The nightcap started in a similar fashion to game one with the host Storm scoring twice in the bottom of the first as Leah Buck smacked a two-run home run to left.

The Warriors answered with three runs in the top of the second.  Clayton had a leadoff single and moved to second when Adams was hit by a pitch.  Miller's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners.  Myers fly ball to center field was dropped allowing two runs to score.  After a walk to junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay), Nadolny laced an RBI double to left scoring Myers.

WSU added to its lead in the third as Kressler had a leadoff single through the left side.  Turkalj followed with a single to right center and advanced to second on the throw to third.  Clayton's sacrifice fly to right plated Kressler.

Wayne State tallied the final two runs of the game in the top of the sixth.  Favela had a one-out single and went to third on a single to left by Nadolny.  An RBI groundout by Psenicka made it 5-2, while Kressler had an RBI single to right.
