Baseball Wins Three of Four from Northwood

The Warriors won game two in walk off fashion to secure the series victory.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (18-18-1, 12-11-1 GLIAC) split with Northwood (22-18, 15-9 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon. On Senior Day, the Warriors dropped game one 8-3 before winning game two in walk off fashion, 4-3.

The six Warrior seniors that were honored before first pitch were Christian Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Jake Davis (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek), Nate Gendron (Plymouth, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child), Nate Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern), Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.).

Game One (L, 3-8)
The Warriors trailed 7-0 after four innings. The Timberwolves scored three runs on three hits and a WSU error in the top of the third inning. NU added two more runs in the fourth inning.

Another run in the sixth inning gave the visitors an 8-0 lead.

Manis singled to center to begin the bottom of the sixth inning before a Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) walk. An RBI single from Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) got the Warriors on the board.

WSU scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on three hits. Zimmerman and Baldwin collected RBIs but the rally would fall short.

Starter Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (3-4) last just three innings and allowed four earned runs while walking five and striking out five. Bilkovic, Davis and Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) combined to pitch the final four innings.

Baldwin went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Game Two (W, 4-3)
Northwood scored one run in the first inning and two in the third inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) held the T-Wolves scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. NU put two runners on in the sixth inning but JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) replaced Horvath and kept the deficit at three.

A pinch-hit single from Travis Rodery (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt) began the bottom of the seventh inning. After a single from Olszewski and a wild pitch, a fielder's choice RBI plated the inning's first run. A two-run double off the bat of Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) tied the game at 3-3 after seven innings.

Conti kept the game tied at 3-3 with a scoreless eighth inning. Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) (4-3)  danced around a one-out double and a wild pitch to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) singled to right field. Kevin Moore (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) walked before a fielding error loaded the bases for Baldwin. Baldwin drew a five-pitch walk for the game-winning RBI.

Horvath struck out five and allowed one earned run over five 1/3 innings. Conti pitched two 2/3 innings and did not allow a run while Sorenson lowered his season ERA to 1.11 with his one inning of scoreless work.

Wayne State will travel to Ohio Dominican for a non-conference nine-inning game on Tuesday afternoon.
